| We were married during my
senior year at Texas A&M and my wife's junior year. That
summer we spent almost 2 months living with her parents. I
was able to get a student visa so I could work and was lucky
enough to get a decent job. My wife and I worked together
for 5 weeks at a sausage packing plant called Lutz. It was
not a pleasant job but we earned enough to pay for much of the
wedding. It is a tradition on the Thursday before a marriage,
which typically happens on a Saturday that they show up at your
house and throw dishes on your driveway. It was fun, but
they wouldn't stop and ended up cleaning up for a few hours once
they did. After it was all cleaned up a jokester snuck
around and dumped it all out again so we had to clean it up
again.
We were married once legally in the town hall in Rugendorf,
Germany and then again in the church. The pastor wouldn't
let us take pictures or film in the church so we didn't get live
footage of the church wedding. When we walked out of the
church most of the village of 300+ residents where there.
It is traditional to throw small change to all the children in
the village and for the clubs that you are a part of show up in
their uniforms. You can see a picture of us playing table
tennis in our wedding clothes.
We left Rugendorf for the reception at Hotel Dobrachtal a few
kilometers away. About 50 people were invited and most
came. We had great food, played some fun games and had a
nice musician play the piano for us. Another tradition is
that during the reception some people steal the bride and I had
to drive around to 8 different locations to find her. From
the time they arrived and the time I found her they could drink
as much as they wanted, I had to pay.
We exchanged gifts. She gave me a nice watch and I gave
her a necklace with a heart pendant.
It was a great day. |
